Arabic classes, beginning in February!
Beginning February 1, Mizna will be offering three classes in spoken and written Arabic: Arabic I, II, and III. The classes will take place in the Mizna office in Northeast Minneapolis with instructors Antoine Mefleh and Sondes Douzi Wooldridge.

Arabic Language I

Instructor: Antoine Mefleh
Max Class Size: 12
Teenagers and Adults

Wednesdays, February 1 through April 25, 2012 (12 weeks)
6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Cost: $250.00

The beginning Arabic class focuses on developing basic communication skills in Arabic. Students will learn Classical Arabic, standard vocabulary and grammar, and colloquial dialect. Although all four areas of language learning will be covered in class (i.e., speaking, listening, reading, and writing), the focus of the Arabic class will center on developing speaking and listening abilities with the purpose of engaging in a basic conversation in Arabic. By the end of the course students will have the confidence to greet people, describe and discuss their environment, communicate emotions and feelings, and talk about general situations. Instructor will provide all class materials.









Arabic Language II

Instructor: Sondes Douzi Wooldridge
Max Class Size: 12
Teenagers and Adults

Thursdays, February 2 through April 26, 2012 (12 weeks)
5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
Cost: $250.00

Arabic Language II is for students with a basic introductory knowledge of Arabic and is designed to continue to develop skills in spoken and written language. Students will work with the instructor and other classmates in practicing their knowledge of both spoken and written Arabic using class exercises and written materials. The course will use the textbook Al-Kitaab fii Ta callum al-cArabiyya A Textbook for Beginning Arabic: Part 1 Third Edition by Kristen Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal, and Abbas Al-Tonsi. Students are required to obtain their own copies.








Arabic Language III

Instructor: Sondes Douzi Wooldridge
Max Class Size: 12
Teenagers and Adults

Thursdays, February 2 to April 26, 2012 (12 weeks)
7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Cost: $250.00

Arabic Language III is designed for those students who have had background in Arabic language study and would like to continue to develop their skills in reading, writing, and speaking. Students will work with instructor in intense study to develop their language abilities. The course will use the textbook Al-Kitaab fii Ta callum al-cArabiyya A Textbook for Beginning Arabic: Part 1 Third Edition by Kristen Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal, and Abbas Al-Tonsi. Students are required to obtain their own copies.







Classes will be held at the Mizna office, 2205 California Street NE, Suite 109A, Minneapolis, MN 55418.

About the instructor Sondes Douzi Wooldridge has a Masters degree from the University of Minnesota in comparative and international development education with a minor in linguistics. She is from Tunisia and has been living in the United States for the past 10 years. She is fluent in Arabic, French, English, and Spanish and has been teaching at the University of Minnesota since 1999. She has a passion for teaching languages and working with her students to support and guide them as they embark on learning a new language and culture.

Remi Kanazi: Performance & Workshop
Mizna is partnering with the Loft Literary Center to present a spoken word performance by Remi Kanazi as part of the Loft's Equilibrium series. Remi is an amazing Palestinian American spoken word artist, and his performance on Saturday, December 3 is not to be missed! Also, the following day, Remi will be leading a spoken word workshop. DEADLINE EXTENDED: Literature in Revolution
Mizna, a journal of Arab-American literature, is seeking original writing for our upcoming publication, with a focus on the so-called "Arab Spring." We welcome journal entries and writing from the ground, poetry, short stories, personal essays, theatrical pieces, creative non-fiction, and reflections from abroad and at home on any aspect of the theme of revolutions and uprisings, and the ensuing backlashes and military incursions. About Mizna
Mizna's award-winning journal, published since 1999, continues to be the singular journal of Arab American literature in the United States.

Mizna has been honored to present the annual Twin Cities Arab Film festival in Minnesota since 2003 and has hosted some of the most talented Arab American artists in the visual arts, on stage, in music, and in film—including Simon Shaheen, Suheir Hammad, Hakim Belabbes, Nadia El Fani, Jack Shaheen, Raed Al Helou, Mai Masri, the Iron Sheik, Elias Khoury and others.

In 2004, we opened our Mizna Center, which has given us a physical home to hold meetings, classes, and events.
